In Australia, since January 2009, there has been an ongoing process to modernise awards. These 'modern awards' comply with the National Employment Standards (NES) and cover specific areas. The Awards are being continually updated by Fair Work Australia, with the latest update applying from July 1st, 2011.
Several important changes were made to Australia’s workplace laws that affect all employers and employees in the national industrial relations system. These changes include:

Employers also became responsible for Paid Parental (PPL) Leave from 1 July, 2011.
Under the current Fair Work Australia employment guidelines, all employees, whether they are based on an award or not, must be compensated fairly as detailed in the National Employment Standards. You have flexibility in your employment terms, both in regards to the Award conditions and the National Employment Standards, so long as you can demonstrate that the employee is better off over-all (than he or she would have been under the relevant award) as a result of the agreement you have negotiated.
